Ultrasound Technician Occupation Description

Guy AR ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most practice in Guy AR clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily job duties of an ultrasound technician may include:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently evaluate the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Offered

Guy AR ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the choice to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically take about 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finish. Another option for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to bear in mind is that most ultrasound technician programs do have a clinical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous schools sponsor through Guy AR hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to satisfy the licensing or certification prerequisites in Arkansas or whatever state you choose to work in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Programs

student attending online sonography class in Guy ARAs previously mentioned, virtually all ultrasound tech colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at an authorized off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be satisfied through an internship at a local Guy AR hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the rest of the classes and training can be attended online in your Guy home. This is especially beneficial for those students that keep working while earning their degrees. In addition online colleges are frequently less costly than traditional alternatives. Costs for commuting and study materials can be reduced as well. But just as with every sonographer college you are reviewing, make sure that the online program you choose is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes could be the ideal option for you.

Points to Ask Sonography Programs

Questions to ask Guy AR ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the procedure of evaluating and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You may first want to decide whether you will attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Guy AR area. Naturally location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification also. But there are other things that you should also take into account, for example if the schools are accredited and if they provide internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonographer college before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Programs Accredited? Most sonogram technician schools have obtained some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still important to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed review of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Guy AR employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Find out if the ultrasound technician programs you are assessing have partnerships with Guy AR clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great way to obtain practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help graduates and students develop professional connections in the Guy health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are considering have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Arkansas healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the school they select will need to be within driving distance of their Guy AR home. Individuals who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit far in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the sonographer  program you ultimately pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Guy AR area, confirm that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family obligations.
