Sonographer Work Description

Hampton AR ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Hampton AR hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily work tasks of a sonogram tech may include:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining need for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly gauge the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Available

Hampton AR ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the choice to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take about 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finish. Another alternative for individuals who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that most sonographer colleges do have a clinical training component as part of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which numerous colleges sponsor with Hampton AR clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to fulfill the licensing or certification prerequisites in Arkansas or whichever state you elect to work in.

Sonogram Tech Online Schools

student attending online sonography class in Hampton ARAs aforementioned, nearly all sonogram technician colleges have a practical component to their programs. So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus laboratory or at an approved off-campus facility. Clinical training can often be satisfied through an internship at a local Hampton AR hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the rest of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Hampton home. This is especially beneficial for those students that keep working while getting their degrees. In addition online programs are many times less costly than traditional options. Costs for commuting and study materials can be decreased as well. But just as with every sonography school you are looking at, make sure that the online school you choose is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school may be the right choice for you.

What to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask Hampton AR ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of evaluating and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you will attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Hampton AR area. Certainly location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier also. But there are other variables that you should also take into account, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internship programs. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are some questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech college before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still imperative to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Hampton AR health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Ask if the sonogram technician programs you are reviewing have relationships with Hampton AR clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent way to obtain practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Hampton healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Arkansas healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the school they pick will need to be within commuting distance of their Hampton AR home. Those who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit far in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Hampton AR area, make certain that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.
