Horatio AR sonographer performing ultrasoundSince you have decided to obtain an ultrasound technician degree near Horatio AR, the next step is to begin the process of selecting a college. To begin with, you have to find the ideal program that will provide the necessary education to become a qualified professional. And since a number of states do require that sonographers be either certified or licensed, depending on your residence you may also need preparation to pass a licensing or certification exam. So it’s extremely important that you investigate each program so that you can assess and compare your alternatives. But just where does one start? A number of potential students will begin by searching for schools that are within travelling distance of their homes and then by comparing tuition. Naturally location and cost should be considered when arriving at a decision, but there are additional critical factors also. For example, if the ultrasound technician schools have earned accreditation or if they sponsor internships. These and additional qualifiers will be addressed more in detail later in this post. But to start with, let’s discuss what a sonogram tech does and the credentials and online education programs that are offered.

Ultrasound Tech Occupation Summary

Horatio AR ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Horatio AR clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily job functions of an ultrasound tech may involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining need for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Offered

Horatio AR ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take about 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finish. Another alternative for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to keep in mind is that almost all sonographer schools do have a practical training element as part of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many colleges set up with Horatio AR hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to satisfy the licensing or certification prerequisites in Arkansas or whichever state you choose to work in.

Sonographer Online Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Horatio ARAs previously mentioned, nearly all ultrasound tech schools have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at an approved off campus facility. Practical training can often be satisfied through an internship at a local Horatio AR outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the balance of the classes and training may be attended online in your Horatio home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online colleges are often less costly than on campus options. Expenditures for study materials and commuting may be reduced also. But similarly as with any sonographer program you are looking at, confirm that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the ideal choice for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Technician Programs

Questions to ask Horatio AR ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can begin the procedure of assessing and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You may first want to choose whether you will access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Horatio AR area. Obviously location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier as well. But there are other factors that you should also take into account, such as if the programs are accredited and if they provide internships. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each sonography college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Programs Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech colleges have acquired some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still important to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed examination of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Horatio AR employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level positions.

Are Internships Offered? Find out if the sonogram technician schools you are interested in have relationships with Horatio AR clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great manner to receive hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help students and graduates form professional connections in the Horatio healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Arkansas healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the college they select will need to be within commuting distance of their Horatio AR residence. Those who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit way in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the sonographer  college you ultimately choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Horatio AR area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.
