Ultrasound Technician Work Description

Junction City AR ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Junction City AR clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily job tasks of an ultrasound tech can involve:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

An Associate Degree will generally involve about 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to finish. Another option for individuals who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. Something to bear in mind is that most sonographer colleges do have a clinical training component as a portion of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many colleges sponsor with Junction City AR clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to comply with the certification or licensing prerequisites in Arkansas or whatever state you decide to work in.

Practical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Junction City AR outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the rest of the training and classes may be attended online in your Junction City home. This is especially beneficial for those students that keep working while earning their degrees. Plus online programs are many times less expensive than traditional options. Expenses for study materials and commuting may be reduced also. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech school you are reviewing, confirm that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes may be the right choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonography Schools

You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Junction City AR area. Certainly location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier also. But there are other factors that you should also take into consideration, such as if the schools are accredited and if they provide internship programs. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are some questions that you need ask each sonography school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? The majority of sonogram technician colleges have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still important to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous evaluation of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Junction City AR employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Offered? Inquire if the sonogram tech programs you are evaluating have associations with Junction City AR clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific way to receive hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may assist graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Junction City health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the sonographer schools you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Arkansas healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the school they pick will have to be within driving distance of their Junction City AR residence. Individuals who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the sonographer  program you ultimately choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Junction City AR area, check that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family obligations.
