Ultrasound Tech Occupation Description

Keo AR ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most practice in Keo AR hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily job functions of an ultrasound tech can involve:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly assess the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Offered

Keo AR ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically require about 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to finish. Another option for those who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to consider is that most sonographer programs do have a clinical training component as a portion of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many colleges set up with Keo AR hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to fulfill the certification or licensing prerequisites in Arkansas or whatever state you choose to work in.

Online Sonogram Tech Schools

student attending online sonography class in Keo ARAs previously mentioned, virtually all ultrasound technician colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can receive a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus laboratory or at an approved off-campus facility. Practical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Keo AR outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the remainder of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Keo home. This is especially convenient for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online colleges are many times more affordable than traditional options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials may be decreased also. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech school you are looking at, confirm that the online program you select is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Ultrasound Tech Schools

Questions to ask Keo AR ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of reviewing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You may first want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Keo AR area. Of course location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier as well. But there are additional factors that you should also take into consideration, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech college before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? The majority of sonogram tech schools have earned some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still important to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive evaluation of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Keo AR health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Sponsored? Ask if the ultrasound technician programs you are assessing have associations with Keo AR hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent manner to receive practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help students and graduates establish professional relationships in the Keo medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without help. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Arkansas healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the school they decide on will have to be within travelling distance of their Keo AR residence. Those who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the sonographer  program you finally select can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Keo AR area, make certain that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family obligations.
