Sonographer Job Summary

Lavaca AR ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although many practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Lavaca AR hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily work duties of an ultrasound tech can involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must regularly evaluate the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Offered

Lavaca AR ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the choice to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically require about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to complete. Another alternative for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to keep in mind is that the majority of sonographer schools do have a clinical training component as a portion of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which numerous schools sponsor through Lavaca AR hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification prerequisites in Arkansas or whatever state you choose to practice in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Schools

student attending online sonography class in Lavaca ARAs earlier discussed, virtually all ultrasound technician colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either held in an on-campus laboratory or at a sponsored off campus facility. Practical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Lavaca AR hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the balance of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Lavaca home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that continue working while earning their degrees. In addition online colleges are frequently less costly than on campus options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials may be reduced also. But just as with every sonographer program you are looking at, verify that the online program you choose is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes could be the ideal option for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Technician Programs

Questions to ask Lavaca AR ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can start the procedure of evaluating and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you will access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Lavaca AR area. Obviously location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification also. But there are other variables that you should also take into consideration, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each sonographer program before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Programs Accredited? The majority of sonogram technician colleges have earned some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still important to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous evaluation of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Lavaca AR health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Offered? Inquire if the ultrasound tech schools you are assessing have relationships with Lavaca AR clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great means to get hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can assist students and graduates establish professional connections in the Lavaca healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Find out if the sonographer schools you are considering have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Arkansas healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the school they choose will need to be within commuting distance of their Lavaca AR home. Individuals who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  program you finally pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Lavaca AR area, confirm that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.
