Ultrasound Tech Work Summary

Monroe AR ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While many work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Monroe AR hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily work functions of an ultrasound technician may consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining need for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely gauge the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Offered

Monroe AR ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally involve around 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to finish. Another alternative for individuals who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that the majority of sonographer colleges do have a clinical training element as part of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous colleges organize with Monroe AR clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in Arkansas or whichever state you choose to work in.

Online Sonogram Tech Programs

student attending online sonography class in Monroe ARAs earlier discussed, nearly all ultrasound technician colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can earn a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus lab or at an approved off-campus facility. Practical training can often be fulfilled through an internship at a local Monroe AR outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the balance of the training and classes can be attended online in your Monroe home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that keep working while earning their degrees. Plus online schools are frequently less costly than traditional alternatives. Expenditures for commuting and study materials can be decreased as well. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech school you are considering, make sure that the online school you select is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree could be the ideal option for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Technician Programs

Questions to ask Monroe AR ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You may first want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Monroe AR area. Obviously location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier as well. But there are other things that you must also take into account, such as if the schools are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer college prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Colleges Accredited? Most sonogram tech colleges have received some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still imperative to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous evaluation of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Monroe AR employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Sponsored? Ask if the sonogram technician schools you are evaluating have associations with Monroe AR hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent means to get hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help graduates and students form professional connections in the Monroe health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Arkansas healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the school they select will have to be within commuting distance of their Monroe AR home. Students who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the sonographer  school you finally select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Monroe AR area, make sure that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.

    Monroe County, Arkansas

Monroe County is located in the Arkansas Delta in the U.S. state of Arkansas. The county is named for James Monroe, the fifth President of the United States. Created as Arkansas's 20th county on November 2, 1829, Monroe County is home to two incorporated town and three incorporated cities, including Clarendon, the county seat, and Brinkley, the most populous city. The county is also the site of numerous unincorporated communities and ghost towns.

Occupying only 621 square miles (161,000 ha), Monroe County is the 22nd smallest county in Arkansas. As of the 2010 Census, the county's population is 8,149 people in 4,455 households.[2] Based on population, the county is the fifth-smallest county of the 75 in Arkansas.[3] Located in the Arkansas Delta, the county is largely flat with fertile soils. Historically covered in forest, bayous, swamps, and grasslands, the area was cleared for agriculture by early European-American settlers who used enslaved African Americans to do the work and to cultivate cotton. It is drained by the Cache River, Bayou DeView, and the White River. Three large protected areas preserve old growth bald cypress forest, sloughs and wildlife habitat in the county: Cache River National Wildlife Refuge (NWR), Dagmar Wildlife Management Area and White River NWR and provide places for hunting and fishing.

Interstate 40 is the only Interstate highway in Monroe County, crossing the county from east to west through Brinkley, the largest city. The county also has three United States highways (U.S. Route 49 [US 49], US 70, and US 79) and twelve Arkansas state highways run in the county. A Union Pacific Railroad line crosses the county from southwest to northeast.[4]
