Ultrasound Tech Job Description

Ozan AR ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although many work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Ozan AR hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily work duties of an ultrasound tech can consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining need for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely gauge the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Available

Ozan AR ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically involve about 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to complete. Another option for individuals who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that the majority of sonographer programs do have a clinical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which numerous colleges set up through Ozan AR hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in Arkansas or whichever state you decide to work in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Classes

student attending online sonography class in Ozan ARAs aforementioned, almost all sonogram tech colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either conducted in an on campus laboratory or at an authorized off-campus facility. Clinical training can often be fulfilled through an internship at a local Ozan AR hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the balance of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Ozan home. This is especially beneficial for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online colleges are frequently less expensive than traditional options. Expenses for study materials and commuting may be reduced as well. But similarly as with every sonography college you are considering, verify that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the right option for you.

Points to Ask Sonogram Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Ozan AR ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of evaluating and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You may first want to choose whether you will attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Ozan AR area. Obviously location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification as well. But there are additional variables that you must also take into consideration, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech program before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Programs Accredited? A large number of ultrasound tech schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed review of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Ozan AR employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Find out if the ultrasound technician schools you are assessing have partnerships with Ozan AR clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great manner to get practical experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may assist graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Ozan medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the sonographer schools you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Arkansas healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the college they select will need to be within travelling distance of their Ozan AR home. Those who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit way in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  program you ultimately select can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Ozan AR area, verify that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.
