Ultrasound Technician Work Description

Proctor AR ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While many practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Proctor AR clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily job duties of an ultrasound tech can consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining necessity for further testing

Sonographers must routinely assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Available

Proctor AR ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically require around 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to finish. Another option for individuals who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician colleges do have a practical training element as a portion of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous schools sponsor with Proctor AR hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to fulfill the certification or licensing requirements in Arkansas or whatever state you choose to practice in.

Practical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Proctor AR outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the rest of the classes and training may be attended online in your Proctor home. This is especially beneficial for those students that keep working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online colleges are often less expensive than on-campus alternatives. Expenses for study materials and commuting may be reduced also. But similarly as with every sonography school you are reviewing, check that the online program you select is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal option for you.

However, it’s still crucial to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed assessment of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Proctor AR employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level positions.

Are Internships Provided? Inquire if the sonogram tech colleges you are reviewing have associations with Proctor AR hospitals or clinics for internship programs. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the college they pick will have to be within driving distance of their Proctor AR residence. Students who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit far in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the ultrasound tech  college you ultimately select can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Proctor AR area, make certain that they are available.
