Sonogram Tech Occupation Summary

Reydell AR ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority practice in Reydell AR clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily work duties of an ultrasound tech can include:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining need for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely gauge the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Offered

Reydell AR ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally involve around 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for individuals who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that almost all sonographer programs do have a clinical training element as part of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which numerous colleges sponsor through Reydell AR clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to satisfy the licensing or certification requirements in Arkansas or whichever state you elect to practice in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Reydell ARAs previously mentioned, almost all ultrasound tech schools have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can receive a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at an approved off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be satisfied through an internship at a local Reydell AR hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the balance of the classes and training may be attended online in your Reydell home. This is especially beneficial for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online schools are often more affordable than on-campus options. Costs for study materials and commuting can be lessened also. But similarly as with every sonographer college you are looking at, check that the online program you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the ideal option for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Technician Programs

Questions to ask Reydell AR ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of evaluating and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You may first want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Reydell AR area. Clearly location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier also. But there are additional variables that you must also take into account, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they provide internship programs. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each sonography school before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Programs Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician colleges have received some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still imperative to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous examination of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also help in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Reydell AR employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level positions.

Are Internships Offered? Ask if the sonogram technician programs you are reviewing have partnerships with Reydell AR clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent way to receive hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can assist students and graduates establish professional connections in the Reydell medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new field can be difficult without support. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are considering have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Arkansas healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the school they select will have to be within commuting distance of their Reydell AR home. Students who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the ultrasound tech  program you ultimately select can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Reydell AR area, verify that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.
