Ultrasound Technician Work Description

Springdale AR ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Springdale AR clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily job tasks of an ultrasound tech may consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying need for further testing

Sonographers must frequently assess the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Available

Springdale AR ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally involve around 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to complete. Another alternative for individuals who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that almost all sonographer schools do have a practical training component as part of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which numerous colleges sponsor through Springdale AR clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in Arkansas or whichever state you decide to work in.

Online Sonogram Tech Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Springdale ARAs earlier discussed, almost all sonogram technician schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus laboratory or at an approved off campus facility. Clinical training can usually be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Springdale AR hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the remainder of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Springdale home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. In addition online colleges are often less expensive than on campus options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials can be reduced also. But just as with every sonographer school you are reviewing, verify that the online school you choose is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal option for you.

Subjects to Ask Ultrasound Technician Schools

Questions to ask Springdale AR ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the procedure of assessing and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you will attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Springdale AR area. Clearly location will be significant if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier as well. But there are additional variables that you must also take into account, for example if the programs are accredited and if they provide internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? The majority of sonogram technician schools have earned some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still important to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed examination of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Springdale AR health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are evaluating have associations with Springdale AR clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great manner to get practical experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help graduates and students develop professional connections in the Springdale medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Ask if the sonographer programs you are assessing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Arkansas healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the school they select will need to be within driving distance of their Springdale AR residence. Those who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  school you finally pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Springdale AR area, make sure that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.

Located on the Springfield Plateau deep in the Ozark Mountains, Springdale has long been an important industrial city for the region.[5] In addition to several trucking companies, the city is home to the world headquarters of Tyson Foods, the world's largest meat producing company.[6] Originally named Shiloh, the city changed its name to Springdale when applying for a post office in 1872.[5] The four-county Northwest Arkansas Metropolitan Statistical Area is ranked 109th in terms of population in the United States with 463,204 in 2010 according to the United States Census Bureau.
