Ultrasound Tech Job Summary

Urbana AR ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Urbana AR clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily job duties of an ultrasound technician may include:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining need for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently assess the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Available

Urbana AR ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally take about 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to complete. Another option for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to bear in mind is that almost all sonographer programs do have a clinical training component as a portion of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous schools set up through Urbana AR clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in Arkansas or whatever state you elect to work in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Classes

student attending online sonography class in Urbana ARAs aforementioned, nearly all sonogram tech schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Urbana AR outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the balance of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Urbana home. This is especially beneficial for those students that continue working while getting their degrees. In addition online programs are often less costly than on campus options. Costs for commuting and study materials may be decreased also. But similarly as with every sonographer college you are considering, confirm that the online school you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree could be the right choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask Urbana AR ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of reviewing and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Urbana AR area. Clearly location will be important if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification as well. But there are additional things that you must also take into consideration, for example if the programs are accredited and if they offer internships. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each sonography college before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Schools Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech colleges have earned some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still important to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive evaluation of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Urbana AR health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Find out if the sonogram tech schools you are reviewing have associations with Urbana AR hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific means to obtain hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help graduates and students form professional connections in the Urbana medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Find out if the sonographer programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Arkansas healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the school they choose will need to be within commuting distance of their Urbana AR residence. Those who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the sonographer  program you ultimately select can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Urbana AR area, confirm that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.
