Sonographer Occupation Summary

Wabbaseka AR ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although many practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most practice in Wabbaseka AR clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily work functions of a sonogram technician can include:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining need for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently gauge the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Offered

Wabbaseka AR ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to finish. Another alternative for individuals who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to keep in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician colleges do have a clinical training component as a portion of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which numerous schools set up through Wabbaseka AR hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the licensing or certification prerequisites in Arkansas or whatever state you elect to work in.

Sonographer Online Schools

student attending online sonography class in Wabbaseka ARAs earlier discussed, nearly all ultrasound technician colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Wabbaseka AR hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the balance of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Wabbaseka home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that keep working while earning their degrees. In addition online colleges are often less expensive than on-campus options. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be lessened as well. But just as with every sonography college you are looking at, make sure that the online program you choose is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the ideal option for you.

Subjects to Ask Ultrasound Tech Programs

Questions to ask Wabbaseka AR ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of assessing and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you will attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Wabbaseka AR area. Of course location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification also. But there are other things that you must also take into consideration, such as if the schools are accredited and if they offer internship programs. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonography program prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still imperative to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Wabbaseka AR health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level positions.

Are Internships Provided? Find out if the ultrasound technician programs you are reviewing have associations with Wabbaseka AR clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent means to obtain hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help graduates and students establish professional connections in the Wabbaseka medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the sonographer programs you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Arkansas healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the college they select will need to be within travelling distance of their Wabbaseka AR residence. Students who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit way in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the sonographer  college you finally select can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Wabbaseka AR area, verify that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.
