Sonographer Occupation Summary

Ward AR ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Ward AR clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily job tasks of an ultrasound technician may involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying necessity for additional testing

Sonographers must routinely evaluate the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Available

Ward AR ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally involve around 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finish. Another alternative for those who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to keep in mind is that almost all sonographer programs do have a clinical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous schools set up through Ward AR hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in Arkansas or whichever state you elect to practice in.

Online Sonographer Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Ward ARAs aforementioned, almost all ultrasound technician schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at a sponsored off campus facility. Practical training can often be fulfilled through an internship at a local Ward AR outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the rest of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Ward home. This is especially convenient for those students that keep working while earning their degrees. In addition online colleges are frequently less costly than traditional alternatives. Expenditures for commuting and study materials may be reduced also. But similarly as with any sonography college you are looking at, check that the online school you select is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school may be the right choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Ward AR ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the procedure of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You may first want to choose whether you will access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Ward AR area. Obviously location will be important if you select the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are additional variables that you must also take into consideration, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonographer program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? A large number of sonogram technician colleges have acquired some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still imperative to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed examination of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Ward AR employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Find out if the sonogram tech colleges you are evaluating have associations with Ward AR clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific means to receive practical experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help students and graduates form professional relationships in the Ward medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that first job in a new field can be challenging without help. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are considering have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Arkansas healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the college they pick will need to be within travelling distance of their Ward AR residence. Individuals who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the sonographer  college you ultimately select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Ward AR area, check that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.
