Ultrasound Tech Job Description

Wesley AR ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though many work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Wesley AR hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily work functions of a sonogram tech may include:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining need for further testing

Sonographers must frequently evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Available

Wesley AR ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the choice to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally require about 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to finalize. Another alternative for individuals who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to bear in mind is that the majority of sonographer schools do have a practical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which numerous schools organize with Wesley AR clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the certification or licensing prerequisites in Arkansas or whichever state you elect to practice in.

Online Sonogram Tech Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Wesley ARAs previously mentioned, nearly all sonogram tech schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus lab or at an approved off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can usually be satisfied through an internship at a local Wesley AR hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the rest of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Wesley home. This is particularly convenient for those students that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online schools are often less expensive than traditional alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be decreased also. But just as with any ultrasound tech college you are considering, check that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal option for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Wesley AR ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Wesley AR area. Of course location will be important if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier also. But there are additional things that you must also take into account, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are several questions that you need ask each sonographer college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? The majority of ultrasound tech colleges have earned some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still imperative to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive review of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Wesley AR health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level positions.

Are Internships Provided? Inquire if the sonogram tech colleges you are evaluating have relationships with Wesley AR hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent manner to receive practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can assist graduates and students form professional relationships in the Wesley medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are considering have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Arkansas healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the school they pick will have to be within travelling distance of their Wesley AR home. Students who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  college you finally choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Wesley AR area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family obligations.

    Wesley Clark

Wesley Kanne Clark, Sr. (born December 23, 1944) is a retired General of the United States Army. He graduated as valedictorian of the class of 1966 at West Point and was awarded a Rhodes Scholarship to the University of Oxford, where he obtained a degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics. He later graduated from the Command and General Staff College with a master's degree in military science. He spent 34 years in the U.S. Army, receiving many military decorations, several honorary knighthoods, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Clark joined the 2004 race for the Democratic Party presidential nomination as a candidate in 2003, but withdrew from the primary race in 2004, after winning the Oklahoma state primary, endorsing and campaigning for the eventual Democratic nominee, John Kerry. Clark leads a political action committee, "WesPAC", which he formed after the 2004 primaries[1][2] and used to support Democratic Party candidates in the 2006 midterm elections.[3] Clark was considered a potential candidate for the Democratic nomination in 2008, but, on September 15, 2007, endorsed Senator Hillary Clinton.[4] After Clinton dropped out of the presidential race, Clark endorsed the then-presumptive Democratic nominee, Barack Obama.[5] Clark served as a co-chairman of Growth Energy, an ethanol lobbying group,[6][7] and is on the board of directors of BNK Petroleum.[8] Between July 2012 and November 2015, he was an honorary special advisor to Romanian prime minister Victor Ponta on economic and security matters.[9][10]

Clark's father's family was Jewish; his paternal great-grandfather immigrated to the United States from Belarus in response to the Pale of Settlement and anti-Jewish violence from Russian pogroms. Clark's grandfather, Jacob Kanne, graduated from the Chicago-Kent College of Law and served in the U.S. Naval Reserve as an ensign during World War I, although he never participated in combat. Kanne, living in Chicago, became involved with ward politics in the 1920s as a prosecutor and served in local offices. He served as a delegate to the 1932 Democratic National Convention that nominated Franklin D. Roosevelt as the party's presidential candidate[11] (though his name does not appear on the published roll of convention delegates). His mother was of English ancestry and was a Methodist.[12]
