How to Pick the Right Sonogram Tech School near Alamo California

Alamo CA sonographer performing ultrasoundOnce you have made a decision to pursue an ultrasound technician degree near Alamo CA, the next step is to start the procedure of selecting a college. To begin with, you must find the right program that will provide the proper training to become a qualified professional. And given that a number of states do mandate that ultrasound techs be either licensed or certified, depending on your residence you may also need to be prepared to pass a licensing or certification exam. So it’s extremely important that you investigate each college in order to evaluate and compare your choices. But just where does one start? Many potential students will start by looking for schools that are within driving distance of their homes and then by comparing tuition. Naturally location and cost must be taken into account when making a decision, but there are additional critical factors as well. For instance, if the ultrasound technician schools have earned accreditation or if they offer internships. These and other qualifiers will be addressed more in detail later in this post. But first, let’s go over what an ultrasound tech does and the degrees and online education programs that are available.

Sonographer Job Description

Alamo CA ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Alamo CA hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily job tasks of a sonogram technician can include:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for further testing

Sonographers must frequently assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Available

Alamo CA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take about 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to finish. Another option for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that almost all ultrasound technician schools do have a practical training component as part of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which many colleges set up through Alamo CA clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the licensing or certification requirements in California or whichever state you choose to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Alamo CAAs previously mentioned, virtually all sonogram tech colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can receive a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at an authorized off campus medical care provider. Practical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Alamo CA hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the remainder of the training and classes can be attended online in your Alamo home. This is especially beneficial for those students that keep working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online colleges are many times less expensive than on campus options. Costs for commuting and study materials may be decreased as well. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech program you are considering, check that the online school you choose is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonography Programs

Questions to ask Alamo CA ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the process of evaluating and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you will access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Alamo CA area. Of course location will be important if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier also. But there are additional things that you must also take into consideration, such as if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internships. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonographer school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Colleges Accredited? A large number of ultrasound tech schools have earned some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still crucial to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive review of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Alamo CA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level openings.

Are Internships Sponsored? Find out if the sonogram tech programs you are interested in have relationships with Alamo CA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great way to obtain hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may assist students and graduates form professional relationships in the Alamo medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that first job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Ask if the sonographer programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with California healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the school they decide on will have to be within travelling distance of their Alamo CA home. Individuals who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately select can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Alamo CA area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.

    Alamo, California

Alamo is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Contra Costa County, California, in the United States. It is a suburb located in the San Francisco Bay Area's East Bay region, approximately 28 miles (45 km) east of San Francisco.[6] Alamo is equidistant between the city of Walnut Creek and the incorporated town of Danville. As of the 2010 census, the population was 14,750. The community of Alamo is well known for its bucolic country feel, notable residents, and its affluent lifestyle with the median home price being $1.89 million.

As an unincorporated community, Alamo does not have a government of its own. Police services are provided by the Contra Costa County Office of the Sheriff. Fire and EMS services are provided by the San Ramon Valley Fire Protection District.

Alamo has a median household income of $140,561 (as of 2011[update]).[7] In August 2007, a group of citizens launched a new initiative to incorporate the community,[8] the latest in a series of attempts that go back to the early 1960s or before; it was defeated by referendum in March 2009.[9] Previous failed Alamo incorporation efforts always included parts of other nearby unincorporated areas: Alamo-Danville (1964)[10] and Alamo-Danville-San Ramon (1976).[10][11]
