Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Alleghany CA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily job functions of a sonogram tech may include:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort

Ultrasound techs must frequently evaluate the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Available

Alleghany CA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically require about 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to finish. Another option for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to consider is that almost all sonographer programs do have a practical training component as part of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many schools organize with Alleghany CA hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification prerequisites in California or whichever state you elect to work in.

Online Sonogram Tech Programs

student attending online sonography class in Alleghany CAAs earlier discussed, almost all ultrasound technician colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either conducted in an on campus laboratory or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be fulfilled through an internship at a local Alleghany CA hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the balance of the classes and training can be attended online in your Alleghany home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online colleges are often less expensive than on-campus options. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be lessened as well. But just as with any sonographer program you are considering, make sure that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the right choice for you.

Points to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask Alleghany CA ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can start the process of assessing and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you will attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Alleghany CA area. Certainly location will be critical if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are additional things that you must also take into consideration, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? Most ultrasound tech schools have acquired some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive assessment of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Alleghany CA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Find out if the ultrasound technician colleges you are interested in have partnerships with Alleghany CA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent manner to obtain hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help students and graduates establish professional connections in the Alleghany healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will undoubtedly want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Ask if the sonographer schools you are assessing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with California healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the school they select will have to be within driving distance of their Alleghany CA residence. Students who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit far in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  college you ultimately choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Alleghany CA area, make certain that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family obligations.
