Many prospective students will start by looking for colleges that are within travelling distance of their residences and then by comparing tuition. Naturally cost and location need to be considered when making a decision, but there are additional important factors also. Sonogram Tech Job Description

Alviso CA ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While many practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most practice in Alviso CA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily work functions of a sonogram tech may include:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly gauge the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Offered

Alviso CA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally involve about 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to finish. Another option for individuals who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to bear in mind is that almost all sonographer colleges do have a clinical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many colleges sponsor with Alviso CA clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing requirements in California or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Classes

student attending online sonography class in Alviso CAAs earlier discussed, virtually all sonogram tech colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can receive a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either conducted in an on campus laboratory or at an approved off campus facility. Clinical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Alviso CA outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the remainder of the training and classes may be attended online in your Alviso home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online schools are often more affordable than traditional options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials can be reduced also. But just as with every sonographer college you are considering, check that the online program you choose is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree could be the right choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonogram Tech Programs

Questions to ask Alviso CA ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech schools. You may first want to choose whether you will attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Alviso CA area. Obviously location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification also. But there are other things that you must also take into account, for example if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech program prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Colleges Accredited? A large number of sonogram technician schools have received some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still important to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Alviso CA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Provided? Ask if the ultrasound technician programs you are evaluating have associations with Alviso CA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent manner to obtain practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may assist graduates and students form professional connections in the Alviso healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Ask if the sonographer programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with California healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the school they decide on will have to be within commuting distance of their Alviso CA residence. Students who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit far in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the sonographer  school you finally choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Alviso CA area, make sure that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.
