Sonogram Tech Work Summary

Arcadia CA ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most practice in Arcadia CA clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily work tasks of an ultrasound tech may involve:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Offered

Arcadia CA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually involve about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to complete. Another alternative for individuals who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that almost all sonographer colleges do have a practical training element as part of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which many schools set up through Arcadia CA clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the certification or licensing requirements in California or whichever state you choose to practice in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Schools

student attending online sonography class in Arcadia CAAs aforementioned, virtually all ultrasound technician colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus laboratory or at an authorized off campus facility. Practical training can usually be satisfied through an internship at a local Arcadia CA outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the rest of the classes and training can be attended online in your Arcadia home. This is especially beneficial for those students that keep working while getting their degrees. In addition online colleges are frequently less costly than on-campus alternatives. Costs for commuting and study materials can be lessened also. But similarly as with any ultrasound tech college you are considering, verify that the online program you select is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the right option for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Arcadia CA ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram technician schools. You may first want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Arcadia CA area. Clearly location will be critical if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification as well. But there are other variables that you must also take into consideration, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonographer school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Schools Accredited? Most sonogram technician colleges have acquired some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still important to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous examination of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Arcadia CA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Inquire if the ultrasound tech programs you are evaluating have relationships with Arcadia CA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great way to obtain hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can assist graduates and students form professional relationships in the Arcadia health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without support. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are considering have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with California healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the college they choose will need to be within commuting distance of their Arcadia CA residence. Individuals who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the sonographer  program you ultimately select can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Arcadia CA area, verify that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family obligations.
