Sonographer Job Description

Arcata CA ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Arcata CA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily work tasks of an ultrasound tech can consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying need for further testing

Sonographers must frequently gauge the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Available

Arcata CA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally require around 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finalize. Another option for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that almost all sonographer programs do have a clinical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many schools set up through Arcata CA hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing requirements in California or whatever state you decide to work in.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? Most ultrasound tech colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still important to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed assessment of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Arcata CA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Inquire if the ultrasound tech schools you are evaluating have relationships with Arcata CA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the school they pick will have to be within driving distance of their Arcata CA residence. Students who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  program you finally select can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Arcata CA area, check that they are available.
