Sonogram Tech Job Summary

Ashland CA ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While many practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority practice in Ashland CA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily work duties of an ultrasound technician can consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must regularly assess the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Offered

Ashland CA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically involve about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to finish. Another option for individuals who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to consider is that most ultrasound technician programs do have a clinical training element as part of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which many schools set up through Ashland CA clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to fulfill the certification or licensing requirements in California or whichever state you choose to practice in.

Sonogram Tech Online Classes

student attending online sonography class in Ashland CAAs earlier discussed, nearly all ultrasound tech colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus laboratory or at an approved off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can usually be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Ashland CA outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the remainder of the classes and training may be attended online in your Ashland home. This is especially convenient for those students that keep working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online colleges are many times less expensive than on-campus alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting may be decreased as well. But just as with every sonography school you are reviewing, confirm that the online program you select is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the ideal option for you.

What to Ask Sonogram Tech Programs

Questions to ask Ashland CA ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech schools. You may first want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Ashland CA area. Naturally location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are additional things that you must also take into consideration, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each sonographer college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Colleges Accredited? Most sonogram tech schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still important to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive evaluation of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Ashland CA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Find out if the sonogram technician schools you are assessing have associations with Ashland CA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent manner to obtain practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help graduates and students form professional connections in the Ashland healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with California healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the college they pick will need to be within travelling distance of their Ashland CA residence. Those who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit far in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the sonographer  college you ultimately pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Ashland CA area, check that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.
