Sonogram Tech Job Summary

Baldwin Park CA ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most practice in Baldwin Park CA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily job tasks of a sonogram technician can involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining need for further testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently gauge the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Offered

Baldwin Park CA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally involve about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finish. Another option for individuals who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to keep in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician colleges do have a clinical training element as part of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which numerous colleges sponsor through Baldwin Park CA hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification requirements in California or whatever state you choose to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Schools

student attending online sonography class in Baldwin Park CAAs aforementioned, nearly all sonogram tech schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can receive a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus lab or at a sponsored off campus facility. Practical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Baldwin Park CA hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the balance of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Baldwin Park home. This is especially convenient for those students that keep working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online colleges are frequently less costly than on campus options. Expenses for study materials and commuting can be decreased as well. But similarly as with every sonography school you are looking at, verify that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree could be the right choice for you.

Points to Ask Sonography Programs

Questions to ask Baldwin Park CA ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of evaluating and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Baldwin Park CA area. Of course location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification as well. But there are additional things that you must also take into account, for example if the programs are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are several questions that you need ask each sonographer college prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? Most sonogram technician colleges have obtained some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still important to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive examination of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Baldwin Park CA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level openings.

Are Internships Provided? Inquire if the sonogram technician schools you are evaluating have partnerships with Baldwin Park CA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great means to receive practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help graduates and students establish professional connections in the Baldwin Park health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with California healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the college they pick will need to be within driving distance of their Baldwin Park CA residence. Individuals who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit far in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Baldwin Park CA area, check that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family obligations.
