Ultrasound Tech Job Summary

Beale Afb CA ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Beale Afb CA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily work duties of a sonogram technician may involve:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining necessity for additional testing

Sonographers must routinely assess the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Offered

Beale Afb CA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the choice to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take about 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to consider is that the majority of sonographer schools do have a clinical training element as a portion of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which numerous schools set up with Beale Afb CA hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to satisfy the licensing or certification requirements in California or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Online Sonogram Tech Programs

student attending online sonography class in Beale Afb CAAs aforementioned, virtually all sonogram tech schools have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus laboratory or at a sponsored off-campus facility. Clinical training can often be satisfied through an internship at a local Beale Afb CA outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the rest of the training and classes can be attended online in your Beale Afb home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that keep working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online colleges are often more affordable than on campus options. Expenditures for study materials and commuting may be decreased as well. But just as with any sonographer college you are looking at, check that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the ideal choice for you.

Points to Ask Sonography Schools

Questions to ask Beale Afb CA ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can begin the procedure of assessing and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You may first want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Beale Afb CA area. Certainly location will be critical if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier also. But there are additional factors that you must also take into consideration, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each sonographer school before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician colleges have obtained some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still important to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive evaluation of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Beale Afb CA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Provided? Inquire if the sonogram technician colleges you are interested in have associations with Beale Afb CA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent manner to get hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help graduates and students form professional connections in the Beale Afb healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that first job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Ask if the sonographer schools you are considering have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with California healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the school they select will need to be within travelling distance of their Beale Afb CA home. Individuals who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit far in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  college you finally select can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Beale Afb CA area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family obligations.

The host unit at Beale is the 9th Reconnaissance Wing (9 RW) assigned to the Air Combat Command and part of Twenty-Fifth Air Force. The 9 RW collects intelligence essential for Presidential and Congressional decisions critical to the national defense. To accomplish this mission, the wing is equipped with the nation's fleet of U-2 Dragon Lady and RQ-4 Global Hawk unmanned aircraft and associated support equipment. The wing also maintains a high state of readiness in its combat support and combat service support forces for potential deployment in response to theater contingencies.

Beale AFB was established in 1942 as Camp Beale and is named for Edward Fitzgerald Beale (1822–1893), a former Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy and a Brigadier General in the California Militia who was an explorer and frontiersman in California. Camp Beale became a United States Air Force installation on 1 April 1951 and was renamed Beale Air Force Base.

Beale AFB is the home of the 9th Reconnaissance Wing (9 RW), which also serves as the host wing for the base. The installation is located outside of Linda, about 10 miles (16 km) east of the towns of Marysville and Yuba City and about 40 miles (64 km) north of Sacramento. Beale is a large base in terms of land and has five gates providing access on all sides of the base. Visitors enter the base through a main gate that local merchants, individuals and the Beale Military Liaison Committee donated $100,000 to construct. The base is home for approximately 4,000 military personnel.
