Sonographer Occupation Description

Ben Lomond CA ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Ben Lomond CA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily work functions of an ultrasound tech may consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying need for additional testing

Sonographers must routinely assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Available

Ben Lomond CA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the option to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually involve around 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to finalize. Another option for individuals who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that almost all sonographer programs do have a practical training element as part of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous colleges set up through Ben Lomond CA hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in California or whichever state you elect to work in.

Online Sonogram Tech Programs

student attending online sonography class in Ben Lomond CAAs aforementioned, virtually all sonogram technician colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at an approved off campus facility. Practical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Ben Lomond CA hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the balance of the training and classes can be attended online in your Ben Lomond home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that keep working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online colleges are frequently less expensive than on campus alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting may be reduced also. But just as with any sonographer college you are considering, check that the online program you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree could be the right choice for you.

Topics to Ask Sonography Colleges

Questions to ask Ben Lomond CA ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the procedure of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Ben Lomond CA area. Naturally location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification as well. But there are other things that you should also take into account, such as if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are some questions that you need ask each sonography program before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? Most sonogram tech colleges have earned some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still important to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive examination of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Ben Lomond CA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Ask if the ultrasound technician colleges you are reviewing have partnerships with Ben Lomond CA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific manner to obtain practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can assist students and graduates establish professional connections in the Ben Lomond health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the sonographer programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with California healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the school they decide on will need to be within commuting distance of their Ben Lomond CA residence. Individuals who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the sonographer  program you finally select can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Ben Lomond CA area, check that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.

The San Lorenzo River runs through it, in what is known locally as the San Lorenzo Valley, which runs SE/NW to the east of Ben Lomond Mountain (really a long ridge whose highest point has an elevation of 810m/2660 ft).
