Ultrasound Tech Job Summary

Bieber CA ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most practice in Bieber CA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily work tasks of a sonogram tech may involve:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying need for further testing

Sonographers must routinely evaluate the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Available

Bieber CA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally involve around 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to finish. Another option for those who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to keep in mind is that almost all sonographer schools do have a practical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which numerous colleges set up with Bieber CA clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to satisfy the certification or licensing requirements in California or whichever state you elect to work in.

Online Sonographer Programs

So while you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus lab or at an authorized off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Bieber CA outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the remainder of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Bieber home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online colleges are often more affordable than on-campus options. Costs for study materials and commuting may be reduced also. But just as with every ultrasound tech school you are considering, make sure that the online program you choose is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree could be the right choice for you.

However, it’s still crucial to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive examination of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. Students who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit far in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.
