Sonogram Tech Job Summary

Birds Landing CA ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While many practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority practice in Birds Landing CA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily work functions of a sonogram technician can involve:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for further testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently assess the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Offered

Birds Landing CA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally involve around 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to complete. Another option for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to consider is that the majority of sonographer programs do have a clinical training element as part of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which numerous schools set up with Birds Landing CA clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to fulfill the certification or licensing prerequisites in California or whichever state you decide to work in.

Sonographer Online Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Birds Landing CAAs aforementioned, virtually all ultrasound tech colleges have a practical component to their programs. So while you can receive a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus laboratory or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can usually be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Birds Landing CA hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the rest of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Birds Landing home. This is especially convenient for those students that keep working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online programs are many times less expensive than on campus alternatives. Costs for commuting and study materials may be lessened also. But just as with any sonography college you are considering, verify that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school may be the ideal choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask Birds Landing CA ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can initiate the procedure of reviewing and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you will attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Birds Landing CA area. Certainly location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification also. But there are other variables that you must also take into consideration, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are a few questions that you need ask each sonographer school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? The majority of sonogram tech schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still important to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Birds Landing CA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Sponsored? Find out if the sonogram tech programs you are reviewing have partnerships with Birds Landing CA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent manner to receive practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help students and graduates form professional connections in the Birds Landing health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new field can be difficult without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with California healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the college they decide on will need to be within commuting distance of their Birds Landing CA residence. Students who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the sonographer  college you finally select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Birds Landing CA area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family obligations.
