Ultrasound Technician Occupation Description

Boonville CA ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Boonville CA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily work duties of a sonogram technician can include:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining need for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely assess the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education training on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Offered

Boonville CA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the choice to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically require about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to complete. Another alternative for those who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to consider is that most ultrasound technician programs do have a clinical training element as part of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which many schools sponsor through Boonville CA hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in California or whichever state you elect to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Classes

student attending online sonography class in Boonville CAAs aforementioned, almost all sonogram technician colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus laboratory or at an approved off campus facility. Clinical training can often be fulfilled through an internship at a local Boonville CA hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the balance of the training and classes may be attended online in your Boonville home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that keep working while getting their degrees. In addition online programs are frequently more affordable than on campus alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting may be lessened also. But similarly as with every sonography college you are looking at, make sure that the online school you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the right choice for you.

Points to Ask Sonography Programs

Questions to ask Boonville CA ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can initiate the procedure of reviewing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you will access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Boonville CA area. Of course location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification as well. But there are additional variables that you should also take into consideration, such as if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonographer college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? Most ultrasound tech schools have received some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Boonville CA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Offered? Ask if the ultrasound technician colleges you are reviewing have partnerships with Boonville CA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent means to receive practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help students and graduates form professional relationships in the Boonville health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the sonographer schools you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with California healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the college they pick will need to be within driving distance of their Boonville CA residence. Students who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  college you ultimately select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Boonville CA area, make sure that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.
