Ultrasound Tech Occupation Description

Boulder Creek CA ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority practice in Boulder Creek CA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily work functions of a sonogram tech may consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining necessity for additional testing

Sonographers must frequently evaluate the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Offered

Boulder Creek CA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically take about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to keep in mind is that most sonographer schools do have a practical training component as a portion of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous colleges sponsor through Boulder Creek CA hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing requirements in California or whatever state you choose to work in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Boulder Creek CAAs earlier discussed, nearly all ultrasound tech schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus lab or at an approved off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can often be fulfilled through an internship at a local Boulder Creek CA outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the remainder of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Boulder Creek home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that keep working while earning their degrees. In addition online schools are often less expensive than traditional alternatives. Costs for commuting and study materials may be lessened as well. But similarly as with every sonography school you are considering, confirm that the online program you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school may be the right option for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Tech Schools

Questions to ask Boulder Creek CA ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can start the process of reviewing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you will access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Boulder Creek CA area. Certainly location will be significant if you select the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification as well. But there are additional factors that you must also take into consideration, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are several questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still important to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive review of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Boulder Creek CA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Sponsored? Inquire if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have relationships with Boulder Creek CA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great means to receive hands on training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Boulder Creek healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new field can be difficult without support. Find out if the sonographer programs you are assessing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with California healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the college they choose will need to be within travelling distance of their Boulder Creek CA residence. Individuals who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit way in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the sonographer  program you ultimately pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Boulder Creek CA area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.
