Sonogram Tech Job Description

Buena Park CA ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Buena Park CA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily job tasks of a sonogram technician may involve:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining need for further testing

Sonographers must frequently assess the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Buena Park CA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take about 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to complete. Another option for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to bear in mind is that almost all sonographer programs do have a practical training element as part of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which numerous schools organize with Buena Park CA clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to fulfill the licensing or certification requirements in California or whichever state you choose to practice in.

Online Sonogram Tech Programs

student attending online sonography class in Buena Park CAAs earlier discussed, virtually all sonogram technician schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can receive a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either carried out in an on campus laboratory or at an approved off campus facility. Practical training can usually be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Buena Park CA outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the balance of the training and classes may be attended online in your Buena Park home. This is especially convenient for those students that continue working while earning their degrees. In addition online programs are often less costly than on-campus alternatives. Expenditures for commuting and study materials may be decreased also. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech college you are reviewing, confirm that the online school you select is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes could be the ideal option for you.

Questions to Ask Sonography Programs

Questions to ask Buena Park CA ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the procedure of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Buena Park CA area. Clearly location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier also. But there are additional variables that you should also take into account, for example if the programs are accredited and if they provide internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are a few questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech college before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? Most sonogram technician schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still important to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous assessment of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Buena Park CA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Ask if the ultrasound technician schools you are interested in have partnerships with Buena Park CA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent way to obtain practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may assist graduates and students form professional connections in the Buena Park healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be challenging without support. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with California healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the school they select will have to be within commuting distance of their Buena Park CA home. Students who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the sonographer  college you ultimately choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Buena Park CA area, verify that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.

    Buena Park, California

Buena Park (/ˈbweɪnə/) is a city in northwestern Orange County, California, in the Los Angeles metropolitan area about 12 miles (20 km) northwest of downtown Santa Ana, the county seat. As of Census 2010 its population was 80,530. It is the location of several tourist attractions, including Knott's Berry Farm. It is located about 24 miles southeast of Downtown Los Angeles and is within the Los Angeles metropolitan area.

Original Spanish explorers settled on the enormous ranchos by land grants made by the King of Spain. Manuel Nieto of the Portolà expeditions received such a grant in 1783, which was divided by his heirs into five separate ranchos in 1834. One of them, 46,806-acre (189.42 km2) Rancho Los Coyotes, included the current site of the City of Buena Park. The rancho's adobe headquarters lay on what is now Los Coyotes Country Club's golf course.

The area was transferred from Spanish authority to Mexican rule in 1822 and ceded to the United States in 1848 at the end of the Mexican–American War. California was granted statehood in 1850. Americanization further expanded in the area after completion of the transcontinental railroad in 1869 and its connection to Los Angeles in 1875. By then, Abel Stearns had acquired Rancho Los Coyotes in consideration for loans made to Pio and Andrés Pico. In 1885, James A. Whitaker, a wholesale grocer from Chicago, purchased 690 acres (2.8 km2) of this land from Stearns. In 1887, Whitaker founded the City of Buena Park in conjunction with the railway development of what we now know as Orange County.
