Ultrasound Technician Occupation Description

Clarksburg CA ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While many work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Clarksburg CA hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily job tasks of a sonogram tech can consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently evaluate the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Available

Clarksburg CA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically require around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finish. Another alternative for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to bear in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician colleges do have a practical training element as part of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many colleges sponsor through Clarksburg CA clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification requirements in California or whichever state you elect to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Clarksburg CAAs earlier discussed, almost all sonogram tech schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can receive a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus laboratory or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Clarksburg CA outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the remainder of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Clarksburg home. This is especially beneficial for those students that keep working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online colleges are often more affordable than on-campus alternatives. Expenses for study materials and commuting can be decreased as well. But similarly as with every sonographer college you are reviewing, verify that the online school you choose is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school may be the ideal option for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonogram Tech Programs

Questions to ask Clarksburg CA ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can start the procedure of reviewing and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You may first want to choose whether you will access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Clarksburg CA area. Certainly location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification as well. But there are other variables that you must also take into consideration, for example if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer college before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? The majority of sonogram technician schools have earned some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed evaluation of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Clarksburg CA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level positions.

Are Internships Sponsored? Inquire if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have relationships with Clarksburg CA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent way to obtain hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help graduates and students form professional relationships in the Clarksburg health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new field can be difficult without support. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are considering have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with California healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the school they choose will have to be within commuting distance of their Clarksburg CA residence. Those who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the sonographer  program you ultimately pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Clarksburg CA area, make certain that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family obligations.
