Ultrasound Technician Work Description

Cottonwood CA ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While many practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Cottonwood CA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily job duties of an ultrasound tech may consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying necessity for additional testing

Sonographers must regularly assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Offered

Cottonwood CA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to complete. Another alternative for individuals who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to consider is that the majority of sonographer colleges do have a practical training element as part of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which numerous colleges organize with Cottonwood CA clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in California or whichever state you elect to practice in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Programs

student attending online sonography class in Cottonwood CAAs aforementioned, nearly all ultrasound tech schools have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at a sponsored off campus medical care provider. Practical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Cottonwood CA outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the remainder of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Cottonwood home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that keep working while earning their degrees. In addition online programs are frequently more affordable than on campus options. Costs for commuting and study materials can be reduced as well. But just as with any ultrasound tech program you are reviewing, check that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree could be the ideal option for you.

What to Ask Sonogram Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Cottonwood CA ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can start the procedure of evaluating and comparing sonogram technician schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you will attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Cottonwood CA area. Clearly location will be critical if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification also. But there are other factors that you must also take into account, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internships. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are several questions that you need ask each sonography college before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Schools Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still important to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive review of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Cottonwood CA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Find out if the ultrasound technician schools you are assessing have associations with Cottonwood CA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific way to obtain hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Cottonwood healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without help. Ask if the sonographer schools you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with California healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the college they choose will need to be within driving distance of their Cottonwood CA residence. Students who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit way in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  school you finally choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Cottonwood CA area, check that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.
