Ultrasound Technician Work Summary

Courtland CA ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority practice in Courtland CA hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily work duties of an ultrasound technician can involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining necessity for additional testing

Sonographers must routinely gauge the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Available

Courtland CA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually involve about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to finalize. Another alternative for individuals who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician colleges do have a practical training element as a portion of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which numerous schools organize through Courtland CA clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the certification or licensing requirements in California or whichever state you choose to practice in.

Sonographer Online Schools

student attending online sonography class in Courtland CAAs aforementioned, virtually all sonogram technician schools have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on-campus laboratory or at an approved off campus facility. Clinical training can typically be fulfilled through an internship at a local Courtland CA outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the remainder of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Courtland home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online programs are many times more affordable than traditional alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be lessened as well. But similarly as with any sonographer program you are reviewing, check that the online program you choose is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree may be the right option for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Courtland CA ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the procedure of reviewing and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You may first want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Courtland CA area. Of course location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification also. But there are additional factors that you must also take into account, such as if the programs are accredited and if they offer internship programs. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are a few questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech program prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still important to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive examination of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Courtland CA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Provided? Inquire if the ultrasound tech schools you are interested in have associations with Courtland CA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific manner to obtain practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help students and graduates establish professional relationships in the Courtland health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in a new field can be difficult without support. Find out if the sonographer schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with California healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the college they pick will need to be within driving distance of their Courtland CA home. Individuals who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the sonographer  program you finally pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Courtland CA area, check that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family obligations.
