To begin with, you have to find the ideal program that will provide the proper instruction to become a skilled professional. A number of prospective students will begin by looking for colleges that are within travelling distance of their homes and then by comparing tuition. Of course location and cost must be considered when making a decision, but there are other important factors also. Ultrasound Technician Occupation Summary

Covina CA ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Covina CA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily work duties of an ultrasound tech may include:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Sonographers must regularly evaluate the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Offered

Covina CA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finish. Another alternative for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that most ultrasound technician programs do have a clinical training component as a portion of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many schools sponsor through Covina CA hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to fulfill the certification or licensing requirements in California or whichever state you decide to work in.

Sonogram Tech Online Schools

student attending online sonography class in Covina CAAs earlier discussed, virtually all ultrasound technician colleges have a practical component to their programs. So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus lab or at an approved off campus facility. Clinical training can typically be fulfilled through an internship at a local Covina CA hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the remainder of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Covina home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that keep working while getting their degrees. In addition online colleges are frequently more affordable than on campus alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be decreased also. But just as with every sonography college you are looking at, check that the online school you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree could be the right choice for you.

What to Ask Sonogram Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Covina CA ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of reviewing and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You may first want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Covina CA area. Obviously location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification as well. But there are additional variables that you must also take into account, for example if the programs are accredited and if they provide internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonographer program prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? A large number of sonogram technician schools have earned some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still important to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive assessment of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Covina CA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Inquire if the sonogram tech schools you are evaluating have relationships with Covina CA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent manner to obtain practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can assist graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Covina medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Ask if the sonographer programs you are considering have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with California healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the college they decide on will need to be within driving distance of their Covina CA home. Those who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  college you ultimately select can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Covina CA area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.

    West Covina, California

West Covina is a city in Los Angeles County, California, located 19 miles (31 km) east of Downtown Los Angeles in the eastern San Gabriel Valley and is part of Greater Los Angeles. The population for the city was 106,098 at the 2010 census.

West Covina was incorporated as an independent city in 1923 to prevent the city of Covina from building a sewage farm in the area. Benjamin Franklin Maxson, Jr., (1897-1928) initiated the incorporation process and was the first mayor. Walnut groves and orange groves continued to flourish. The population in 1930 was 769 and blossomed to 1,549 in 1940. As a result of remarkable expansion during the post World War II building boom, West Covina became one of the fastest-growing U.S. cities between 1950 and 1960, with the population increasing 1,000 per cent from less than 5,000 to more than 50,000 citizens. The decades between 1960 and 2000 demonstrated steady growth, which slowed significantly by the time of the 2010 census.

The City of West Covina began the second half of the 20th century with new developments and projects, mostly brought on by big business. The City Hall and police facility were built in 1969 as the first phase of an example of a Joint Powers Authority in the County of Los Angeles. The Civic Center Joint Powers Authority, consisting of the County of Los Angeles and the City of West Covina, also completed a three-level parking structure in the Civic Center complex. The Civic Center complex includes the Los Angeles County Regional Library and the Citrus Municipal Court building and the city offices.
