Sonographer Job Description

Cressey CA ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most practice in Cressey CA hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily job functions of an ultrasound tech can consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly assess the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Available

Cressey CA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require around 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to complete. Another alternative for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to bear in mind is that most ultrasound technician colleges do have a practical training element as part of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which numerous colleges set up through Cressey CA clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the certification or licensing prerequisites in California or whatever state you elect to practice in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Cressey CAAs aforementioned, almost all ultrasound tech schools have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can receive a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Cressey CA outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the balance of the training and classes can be attended online in your Cressey home. This is especially beneficial for those students that keep working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online programs are many times more affordable than on campus alternatives. Expenditures for commuting and study materials may be decreased also. But just as with every ultrasound tech college you are considering, check that the online program you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the right option for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Cressey CA ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the procedure of assessing and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You may first want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Cressey CA area. Naturally location will be critical if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification also. But there are additional things that you must also take into account, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are a few questions that you need ask each sonography program prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech schools have received some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed evaluation of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Cressey CA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level positions.

Are Internships Offered? Inquire if the sonogram technician colleges you are assessing have relationships with Cressey CA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great manner to receive hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can assist graduates and students develop professional connections in the Cressey healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new field can be difficult without support. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with California healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the college they decide on will need to be within driving distance of their Cressey CA home. Individuals who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the sonographer  program you finally choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Cressey CA area, verify that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.

    Cressey, California

Cressey (formerly, Cressy) is a census-designated place[4] in Merced County, California.[2] It is located 6 miles (9.7 km) north-northwest of Atwater,[5] at an elevation of 167 feet (51 m).[2] The population was 394 at the 2010 census.

Cressey is located in the northern part of Merced County. It is just east of where the Santa Fe railroad crosses the Merced River. Ballico is across the river to the northwest. Livingston is to the southwest, and Winton is southeast of Cressey. The ZIP Code is 95312. The area is inside area code 209.

The Cressy post office opened in 1882, closed in 1883, re-opened in 1909, and changed its name to Cressey in 1912.[5] The town was named by the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway for Calvin J. Cressey, local landowner.[5] Cressey has one Postal Office, located on Cressey Way. The Old Post Office was located behind the Cressey General Store, on Third St. Cressey has one active General Store, located on the corner of Santa Fe Dr. and Third St. In the past, the Cressey Store had two Gasoline Pumps; then was reduced to one. Then after, all were taken out of service and removed. Cressey has one County-Owned Park, located on Cressey Way, just West of the Ward Canal, but it's said to be maintained by a few citizens and the Cal-Fire Firefighter Volunteers. Cressey was also said to have one church (but later turned into a private home) on the corner of Crocker Ave and Third St. It was also said that Cressey had a Hotel near the RailRoad (Santa Fe) but has not been confirmed. Cressey had an Old "one-lane" iron suspension bridge (similar to the Historic Shaffer Bridge), that was off of Meadow Dr, that went over the Merced River. That bridge was a "cut-off" or an alternate way to Ballico, CA; that went onto Alves Rd. The bridge was later demolished after multiple injuries sustained by kids jumping off into the water. Cressey is patrolled by the Merced County Sheriffs Office. Cressey has one Elementary School (Ballico-Cressey School District, K-2).
