Sonogram Tech Work Description

Denair CA ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although many practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority practice in Denair CA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily work functions of a sonogram technician can involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Sonographers must frequently gauge the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Available

Denair CA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the option to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically require about 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to consider is that the majority of sonographer colleges do have a practical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many schools sponsor with Denair CA hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to fulfill the certification or licensing prerequisites in California or whatever state you decide to work in.

Sonogram Tech Online Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Denair CAAs aforementioned, virtually all sonogram tech colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can receive a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either conducted in an on campus laboratory or at a sponsored off-campus facility. Clinical training can often be satisfied through an internship at a local Denair CA outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the balance of the training and classes may be attended online in your Denair home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that keep working while earning their degrees. Plus online programs are often less costly than on-campus alternatives. Costs for commuting and study materials can be decreased as well. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech college you are considering, make sure that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school may be the right choice for you.

Topics to Ask Sonogram Tech Programs

Questions to ask Denair CA ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the process of evaluating and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You may first want to decide whether you will attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Denair CA area. Certainly location will be important if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification as well. But there are additional things that you must also take into consideration, for example if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internships. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? A large number of sonogram technician schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still imperative to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed examination of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Denair CA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level openings.

Are Internships Sponsored? Inquire if the ultrasound technician schools you are interested in have partnerships with Denair CA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great means to obtain hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can assist graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Denair medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with California healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the college they pick will need to be within driving distance of their Denair CA residence. Those who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit far in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Denair CA area, confirm that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.
