Ultrasound Technician Occupation Summary

El Granada CA ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority practice in El Granada CA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily work functions of an ultrasound technician may include:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining need for additional testing

Sonographers must frequently assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education training on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Available

El Granada CA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically require about 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to complete. Another option for those who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to consider is that almost all ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training element as part of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which many colleges set up through El Granada CA hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to fulfill the certification or licensing requirements in California or whatever state you choose to work in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Classes

student attending online sonography class in El Granada CAAs previously mentioned, almost all ultrasound technician colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can receive a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local El Granada CA hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the balance of the training and classes can be attended online in your El Granada home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that continue working while earning their degrees. In addition online programs are often less costly than traditional options. Expenditures for study materials and commuting may be lessened also. But just as with any sonography program you are reviewing, make sure that the online school you choose is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the ideal choice for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Tech Programs

Questions to ask El Granada CA ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a school campus in the El Granada CA area. Clearly location will be significant if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier also. But there are additional factors that you should also take into consideration, such as if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each sonographer college prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Schools Accredited? Most sonogram tech schools have earned some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still important to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous review of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous El Granada CA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Sponsored? Ask if the sonogram technician colleges you are assessing have associations with El Granada CA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent means to receive practical training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help students and graduates establish professional connections in the El Granada health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will undoubtedly want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new field can be difficult without support. Ask if the sonographer programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with California healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the school they decide on will have to be within travelling distance of their El Granada CA home. Students who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit way in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  school you finally choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the El Granada CA area, confirm that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family obligations.
