Sonogram Tech Job Summary

El Monte CA ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most practice in El Monte CA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily work duties of an ultrasound technician can involve:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying need for further testing

Sonographers must frequently gauge the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Available

El Monte CA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally involve around 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finalize. Another alternative for individuals who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that most sonographer schools do have a clinical training element as part of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by participating in an internship program which numerous colleges sponsor through El Monte CA hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the licensing or certification prerequisites in California or whichever state you elect to work in.

Sonogram Tech Online Programs

student attending online sonography class in El Monte CAAs previously mentioned, virtually all ultrasound tech colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at an approved off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local El Monte CA hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the remainder of the training and classes can be attended online in your El Monte home. This is particularly convenient for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online schools are many times more affordable than on-campus alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting may be decreased also. But similarly as with every sonographer college you are looking at, confirm that the online program you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes could be the right choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonography Colleges

Questions to ask El Monte CA ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of reviewing and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You may first want to choose whether you will access classes online or travel to a school campus in the El Monte CA area. Obviously location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are additional factors that you should also take into consideration, for example if the programs are accredited and if they provide internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Schools Accredited? The majority of sonogram technician schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still crucial to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed review of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of El Monte CA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level positions.

Are Internships Provided? Ask if the ultrasound tech colleges you are reviewing have partnerships with El Monte CA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great manner to obtain hands on training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can assist graduates and students develop professional connections in the El Monte health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Find out if the sonographer schools you are considering have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with California healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the school they choose will have to be within driving distance of their El Monte CA residence. Those who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit far in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the sonographer  college you finally choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the El Monte CA area, verify that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.

    El Monte, California

El Monte /ɛl ˈmɒntiː/ is a residential, industrial, and commercial city in Los Angeles County, California, the United States. The city lies in the San Gabriel Valley east of the city of Los Angeles.

El Monte's slogan is "Welcome to Friendly El Monte" and historically is known as "The End of the Santa Fe Trail". As of the 2010 census, the city had a total population of 113,475, down from 115,965 at the 2000 census. As of 2010, El Monte was the 51st largest city in California.[8]

El Monte is situated between the San Gabriel and Rio Hondo Rivers; residents claimed that anything could be grown in the area. Between 1770 and 1830, Spanish soldiers and missionaries often stopped here for respite. They called the area 'El Monte,' which in Spanish means 'the mountain' or 'the mount'.[9] Most people assume the name refers to a mountain, but there were no mountains in the valley. The word is an archaic Spanish translation of that era, meaning "the wood". The first explorers had found this a rich, low-altitude land, blanketed with thick growths of wispy willows, alders, and cattails, located between the two rivers. Wild grapevines and watercress also abounded. El Monte is approximately 7 miles long and 4 miles wide.[10] When the State Legislature organized California into more manageable designated townships in the 1850s, they called it the El Monte Township. In a short time the name returned to the original El Monte.[11]
