Ultrasound Technician Job Summary

Elmira CA ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority practice in Elmira CA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily work functions of an ultrasound tech can consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying necessity for further testing

Sonographers must frequently assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Offered

Elmira CA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically require about 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to finalize. Another option for individuals who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that most sonographer schools do have a clinical training element as a portion of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many schools set up with Elmira CA hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to fulfill the certification or licensing requirements in California or whichever state you choose to work in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Elmira CAAs earlier discussed, almost all sonogram technician schools have a practical component to their programs. So although you can earn a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can typically be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Elmira CA hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the rest of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Elmira home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that keep working while earning their degrees. Plus online colleges are many times less costly than traditional options. Costs for commuting and study materials can be decreased also. But just as with every sonography college you are considering, make sure that the online school you choose is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes may be the right option for you.

What to Ask Sonography Programs

Questions to ask Elmira CA ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the procedure of reviewing and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you will attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Elmira CA area. Certainly location will be important if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier also. But there are other factors that you must also take into consideration, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonography program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? The majority of ultrasound tech schools have acquired some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous examination of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Elmira CA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are interested in have relationships with Elmira CA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great means to obtain practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Elmira medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Ask if the sonographer schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with California healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the college they choose will need to be within travelling distance of their Elmira CA home. Students who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit way in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the sonographer  school you ultimately choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Elmira CA area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.
