Ultrasound Tech Job Description

Elverta CA ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most practice in Elverta CA clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily job duties of an ultrasound technician can consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining necessity for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Offered

Elverta CA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the choice to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally involve around 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to finish. Another alternative for individuals who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that the majority of sonographer colleges do have a practical training component as part of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous colleges organize through Elverta CA hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification requirements in California or whatever state you decide to work in.

Online Sonographer Classes

student attending online sonography class in Elverta CAAs earlier discussed, almost all sonogram technician schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can earn a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus laboratory or at an approved off-campus facility. Clinical training can usually be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Elverta CA outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the remainder of the training and classes can be attended online in your Elverta home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that keep working while earning their degrees. Plus online programs are often less expensive than on-campus alternatives. Costs for commuting and study materials may be decreased also. But just as with any sonography college you are considering, make sure that the online program you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal option for you.

Points to Ask Sonography Schools

Questions to ask Elverta CA ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You may first want to choose whether you will access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Elverta CA area. Clearly location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier as well. But there are additional things that you must also take into account, for example if the programs are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are a few questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech program prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Schools Accredited? Most sonogram tech schools have received some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still crucial to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed evaluation of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Elverta CA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Offered? Inquire if the ultrasound tech colleges you are interested in have relationships with Elverta CA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent way to receive hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may assist students and graduates form professional connections in the Elverta medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with California healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the college they select will need to be within travelling distance of their Elverta CA home. Those who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the sonographer  school you finally select can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Elverta CA area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.
