Sonographer Occupation Summary

Fairfax CA ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Fairfax CA hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily job duties of an ultrasound tech may consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying necessity for further testing

Sonographers must routinely evaluate the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Offered

Fairfax CA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to complete. Another alternative for individuals who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to consider is that almost all ultrasound technician colleges do have a practical training element as part of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous colleges set up through Fairfax CA clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification requirements in California or whatever state you decide to work in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Classes

student attending online sonography class in Fairfax CAAs earlier discussed, almost all sonogram technician schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at an authorized off campus facility. Practical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Fairfax CA outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the rest of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Fairfax home. This is particularly convenient for those students that continue working while getting their degrees. In addition online colleges are many times more affordable than on campus options. Costs for commuting and study materials can be decreased as well. But similarly as with any sonography program you are reviewing, check that the online school you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the ideal choice for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Technician Schools

Questions to ask Fairfax CA ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the procedure of reviewing and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Fairfax CA area. Clearly location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification also. But there are additional things that you should also take into account, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are several questions that you need ask each sonographer program before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech colleges have obtained some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still important to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous examination of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Fairfax CA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Sponsored? Inquire if the ultrasound technician programs you are reviewing have associations with Fairfax CA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent manner to receive hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may assist students and graduates form professional relationships in the Fairfax healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in a new field can be difficult without help. Find out if the sonographer programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with California healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the college they pick will have to be within commuting distance of their Fairfax CA residence. Students who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  program you finally choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Fairfax CA area, make certain that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family obligations.
