Ultrasound Technician Job Description

Fairfield CA ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority practice in Fairfield CA hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily work functions of an ultrasound tech may consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying need for additional testing

Sonographers must frequently assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Offered

Fairfield CA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the choice to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally involve about 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to complete. Another alternative for individuals who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to keep in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician colleges do have a practical training component as part of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous schools set up through Fairfield CA hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to fulfill the licensing or certification requirements in California or whatever state you choose to practice in.

Online Sonographer Programs

student attending online sonography class in Fairfield CAAs earlier discussed, almost all ultrasound technician colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either carried out in an on campus laboratory or at an authorized off campus facility. Practical training can typically be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Fairfield CA outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the remainder of the training and classes may be attended online in your Fairfield home. This is particularly convenient for those students that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online schools are frequently more affordable than on-campus options. Costs for study materials and commuting can be decreased also. But just as with every sonography college you are reviewing, make sure that the online program you choose is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school may be the right choice for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Technician Schools

Questions to ask Fairfield CA ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the procedure of assessing and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Fairfield CA area. Of course location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are other factors that you must also take into consideration, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internships. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonography college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? The majority of sonogram technician colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still crucial to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous examination of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Fairfield CA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are interested in have associations with Fairfield CA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent means to receive practical experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help students and graduates establish professional relationships in the Fairfield medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Find out if the sonographer programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with California healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the school they decide on will need to be within travelling distance of their Fairfield CA home. Those who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit far in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately select can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Fairfield CA area, verify that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.
