Galt CA sonographer performing ultrasoundSince you have made a decision to obtain an ultrasound technician degree near Galt CA, the next step is to start the process of picking a school. First, you must find the right program that will furnish the proper education to become a skilled professional. And given that a number of states do require that sonographers be either licensed or certified, depending on where you will practice you may also need preparation to pass a licensing or certification examination. So it’s very important that you research each school in order to assess and compare your options. But just where does one begin? Many prospective students will begin by searching for schools that are within travelling distance of their homes and then by comparing tuition. Certainly cost and location need to be taken into account when arriving at a decision, but there are additional critical factors as well. For instance, if the ultrasound technician schools are accredited or if they offer internships. These and other qualifications will be addressed more in detail later in this article. But to start with, let’s review what a sonogram tech does and the credentials and online training options that are available.

Ultrasound Tech Occupation Summary

Galt CA ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although many practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Galt CA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily work duties of a sonogram tech can involve:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining need for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly gauge the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Available

Galt CA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the choice to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally involve around 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to complete. Another option for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician programs do have a clinical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous schools organize with Galt CA clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to fulfill the licensing or certification requirements in California or whichever state you elect to work in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Galt CAAs aforementioned, virtually all sonogram technician colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at an approved off campus facility. Clinical training can typically be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Galt CA outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the balance of the training and classes may be attended online in your Galt home. This is particularly convenient for those students that keep working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online programs are often more affordable than traditional alternatives. Expenses for study materials and commuting may be reduced as well. But similarly as with any sonographer program you are considering, verify that the online program you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the ideal option for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Tech Schools

Questions to ask Galt CA ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of reviewing and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you will attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Galt CA area. Clearly location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification as well. But there are other things that you must also take into consideration, for example if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography program before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician colleges have acquired some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still important to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive evaluation of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Galt CA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level openings.

Are Internships Sponsored? Inquire if the sonogram tech programs you are interested in have relationships with Galt CA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent means to obtain practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help graduates and students form professional relationships in the Galt healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be challenging without support. Find out if the sonographer schools you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with California healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the college they decide on will need to be within commuting distance of their Galt CA home. Those who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the sonographer  program you finally select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Galt CA area, verify that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family obligations.
