Ultrasound Technician Work Description

Hanford CA ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While many practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most practice in Hanford CA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily work functions of a sonogram tech can include:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely gauge the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Available

Hanford CA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the option to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally take about 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to complete. Another alternative for individuals who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that most ultrasound technician colleges do have a practical training component as part of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which numerous schools set up with Hanford CA clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to fulfill the certification or licensing prerequisites in California or whatever state you choose to work in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Schools

student attending online sonography class in Hanford CAAs previously mentioned, almost all ultrasound tech schools have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can receive a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at an approved off campus medical care provider. Practical training can often be satisfied through an internship at a local Hanford CA outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the rest of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Hanford home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online programs are many times less costly than on campus options. Costs for study materials and commuting may be reduced as well. But just as with every ultrasound tech college you are looking at, confirm that the online program you select is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree could be the right option for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Hanford CA ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can initiate the procedure of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You may first want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Hanford CA area. Clearly location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification also. But there are other factors that you must also take into account, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are some questions that you need ask each sonography college prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Schools Accredited? The majority of sonogram tech colleges have received some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed examination of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Hanford CA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Inquire if the sonogram technician schools you are reviewing have partnerships with Hanford CA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific means to receive hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help graduates and students form professional relationships in the Hanford medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Find out if the sonographer schools you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with California healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the college they choose will need to be within driving distance of their Hanford CA home. Students who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the ultrasound tech  school you finally pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Hanford CA area, make certain that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.
