Sonogram Tech Job Summary

Heber CA ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Heber CA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily work duties of an ultrasound tech can consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining need for further testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently assess the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Offered

Heber CA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to finish. Another option for individuals who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that most sonographer programs do have a clinical training element as part of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which numerous colleges organize through Heber CA clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in California or whatever state you elect to work in.

Sonographer Online Schools

student attending online sonography class in Heber CAAs earlier discussed, virtually all sonogram tech colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can receive a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus laboratory or at an authorized off campus facility. Clinical training can usually be fulfilled through an internship at a local Heber CA outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the remainder of the training and classes may be attended online in your Heber home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. In addition online programs are often more affordable than on-campus options. Expenditures for study materials and commuting can be decreased as well. But similarly as with every sonography program you are considering, verify that the online program you select is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes could be the ideal option for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonography Programs

Questions to ask Heber CA ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can start the procedure of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech schools. You may first want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Heber CA area. Naturally location will be important if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier also. But there are additional factors that you must also take into account, such as if the programs are accredited and if they offer internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are a few questions that you need ask each sonographer college before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Schools Accredited? Most ultrasound tech schools have earned some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still important to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive examination of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Heber CA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Inquire if the ultrasound technician schools you are reviewing have associations with Heber CA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific manner to receive hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help students and graduates establish professional connections in the Heber health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are considering have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with California healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the college they select will need to be within driving distance of their Heber CA home. Those who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the sonographer  college you ultimately choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Heber CA area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.
