Ultrasound Tech Job Summary

Highland CA ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although many work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most practice in Highland CA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily job duties of an ultrasound tech may consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining need for further testing

Sonographers must frequently evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Available

Highland CA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally involve around 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to consider is that almost all sonographer programs do have a practical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many schools set up through Highland CA hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to satisfy the licensing or certification requirements in California or whatever state you elect to practice in.

Online Sonogram Tech Programs

student attending online sonography class in Highland CAAs earlier discussed, almost all sonogram technician colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can receive a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at a sponsored off campus medical care provider. Practical training can often be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Highland CA hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the rest of the classes and training can be attended online in your Highland home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that keep working while earning their degrees. In addition online schools are often less costly than on-campus alternatives. Expenses for study materials and commuting can be lessened also. But just as with any sonography school you are looking at, verify that the online school you choose is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the right option for you.

Subjects to Ask Ultrasound Tech Programs

Questions to ask Highland CA ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of reviewing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You may first want to choose whether you will access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Highland CA area. Of course location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier also. But there are additional variables that you must also take into account, for example if the programs are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each sonographer school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Programs Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still imperative to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed examination of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Highland CA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Provided? Find out if the sonogram tech schools you are assessing have relationships with Highland CA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific way to get practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can assist students and graduates develop professional connections in the Highland healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new field can be challenging without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are considering have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with California healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the school they decide on will need to be within driving distance of their Highland CA residence. Individuals who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the sonographer  college you ultimately choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Highland CA area, make certain that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.
