Sonographer Job Summary

Hydesville CA ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most practice in Hydesville CA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily job functions of a sonogram tech can involve:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must frequently evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Available

Hydesville CA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually involve around 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to finish. Another option for individuals who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to keep in mind is that most ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training component as a portion of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous schools organize with Hydesville CA clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to fulfill the certification or licensing requirements in California or whatever state you elect to work in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Classes

student attending online sonography class in Hydesville CAAs earlier discussed, almost all sonogram technician schools have a practical component to their programs. So although you can receive a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus laboratory or at an authorized off campus facility. Practical training can usually be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Hydesville CA outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the remainder of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Hydesville home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that keep working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online programs are many times more affordable than traditional alternatives. Costs for commuting and study materials can be reduced as well. But similarly as with any sonographer school you are reviewing, check that the online school you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes could be the right choice for you.

Questions to Ask Sonography Colleges

Questions to ask Hydesville CA ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Hydesville CA area. Clearly location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification as well. But there are additional things that you should also take into consideration, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Colleges Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still important to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive review of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also help in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Hydesville CA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level positions.

Are Internships Offered? Inquire if the sonogram tech programs you are interested in have partnerships with Hydesville CA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific way to receive hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help students and graduates form professional connections in the Hydesville healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new field can be difficult without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with California healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the college they choose will have to be within travelling distance of their Hydesville CA residence. Those who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit far in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  college you finally select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Hydesville CA area, verify that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family obligations.
