Sonogram Tech Job Summary

Independence CA ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though many work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Independence CA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily job functions of an ultrasound technician may consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining need for further testing

Sonographers must routinely assess the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Offered

Independence CA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically require about 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finalize. Another option for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to consider is that the majority of sonographer schools do have a clinical training component as part of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many colleges sponsor with Independence CA clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the certification or licensing requirements in California or whichever state you choose to practice in.

Sonographer Online Schools

So while you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off campus facility. Practical training can often be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Independence CA hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the rest of the training and classes can be attended online in your Independence home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online programs are many times less costly than traditional options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials may be reduced as well. But just as with any sonography college you are reviewing, confirm that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes could be the right option for you.

Subjects to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Independence CA ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the procedure of evaluating and comparing sonogram technician schools. You may first want to choose whether you will attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Independence CA area. Of course location will be critical if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier as well. But there are additional things that you must also take into account, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each sonographer college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? Most ultrasound technician colleges have received some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive review of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial aid and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Independence CA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level openings.

Are Internships Offered? Find out if the sonogram tech programs you are assessing have relationships with Independence CA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific means to get practical training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can assist graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Independence medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Find out if the sonographer schools you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with California healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the college they decide on will have to be within commuting distance of their Independence CA home. Those who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit far in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the sonographer  college you finally pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Independence CA area, check that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.
