Ultrasound Technician Job Description

Jamul CA ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although many practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most practice in Jamul CA hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily job duties of a sonogram tech can involve:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Sonographers must routinely evaluate the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Offered

Jamul CA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the choice to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically require around 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to finalize. Another option for individuals who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that almost all ultrasound technician programs do have a practical training component as part of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which numerous schools organize with Jamul CA clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification requirements in California or whichever state you choose to work in.

Online Sonographer Programs

student attending online sonography class in Jamul CAAs previously mentioned, nearly all ultrasound technician schools have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at an authorized off-campus facility. Practical training can usually be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Jamul CA hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the balance of the classes and training can be attended online in your Jamul home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online programs are many times less costly than on-campus alternatives. Expenditures for commuting and study materials may be lessened also. But similarly as with any sonographer program you are reviewing, verify that the online school you select is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school may be the right option for you.

Questions to Ask Sonography Colleges

Questions to ask Jamul CA ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you will attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Jamul CA area. Of course location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification also. But there are additional variables that you must also take into account, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are a few questions that you need ask each sonographer program before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Schools Accredited? Most sonogram technician schools have obtained some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still crucial to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive review of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Jamul CA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Provided? Find out if the sonogram technician programs you are reviewing have partnerships with Jamul CA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific means to get hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Jamul medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new field can be challenging without support. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are considering have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with California healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the school they pick will have to be within commuting distance of their Jamul CA home. Those who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit far in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the sonographer  program you ultimately choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Jamul CA area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family obligations.
