Sonogram Tech Occupation Description

Johannesburg CA ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority practice in Johannesburg CA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily work tasks of a sonogram tech can consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely gauge the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Offered

Johannesburg CA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take around 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to finish. Another alternative for individuals who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician programs do have a clinical training element as a portion of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many schools sponsor with Johannesburg CA hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the certification or licensing prerequisites in California or whichever state you decide to work in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Johannesburg CAAs earlier discussed, virtually all sonogram technician colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either held in an on-campus laboratory or at an authorized off campus facility. Practical training can often be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Johannesburg CA hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the rest of the training and classes may be attended online in your Johannesburg home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. In addition online colleges are many times less expensive than traditional alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting can be reduced as well. But just as with any ultrasound tech college you are reviewing, verify that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree could be the right choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Ultrasound Tech Schools

Questions to ask Johannesburg CA ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the procedure of assessing and comparing sonogram technician schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Johannesburg CA area. Of course location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier also. But there are additional factors that you should also take into account, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are several questions that you need ask each sonography college before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? Most sonogram tech schools have earned some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous review of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Johannesburg CA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level positions.

Are Internships Offered? Ask if the sonogram technician schools you are interested in have associations with Johannesburg CA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent way to obtain practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Johannesburg health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are considering have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with California healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the college they pick will need to be within travelling distance of their Johannesburg CA home. Individuals who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  college you finally select can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Johannesburg CA area, check that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.
