The majority work in Kentfield CA hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily work functions of a sonogram tech can include:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable

  • Reviewing the results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Sonographers must frequently evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

Something to bear in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician programs do have a clinical training element as part of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which many colleges sponsor through Kentfield CA clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in California or whatever state you decide to work in.

Plus online schools are often less expensive than on campus options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials may be decreased as well. But just as with every sonographer college you are reviewing, make sure that the online school you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the right option for you.

Questions to ask Kentfield CA ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the procedure of reviewing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Kentfield CA area. Obviously location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification also. But there are additional variables that you must also take into consideration, for example if the schools are accredited and if they provide internships. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each sonographer college before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician colleges have earned some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous evaluation of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Kentfield CA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Find out if the sonogram tech schools you are reviewing have relationships with Kentfield CA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent manner to obtain hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can assist graduates and students develop professional connections in the Kentfield medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with California healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the college they select will have to be within travelling distance of their Kentfield CA home. Those who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the sonographer  program you finally choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Kentfield CA area, check that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.
